Red Line Airport Shuttles and Central Interchange Projects Lead Saturday Traffic Alerts

Saturday Commute Overview

Drivers and transit riders in Cleveland should prepare for a mix of infrastructure projects and specific service disruptions this Saturday, March 7, 2026. While weekend traffic volume is typically lighter, major long-term construction at the I-90/I-77 interchange and a scheduled rail replacement service for the airport branch of the Red Line will require extra travel time.

Public Transit: Red Line Airport Shuttles

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has issued a service alert for the Red Line effective this morning. From 2:00 AM until approximately 11:39 AM today, rail service between the Brookpark and Airport stations is suspended. Riders traveling to or from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport are being redirected to #66R replacement buses. These shuttle buses will pick up and drop off passengers at the designated bus stops at each affected station. Regular rail service to the airport is expected to resume just before noon.

Major Construction: I-90 Central Interchange

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has officially kicked off the $328 million I-90 Central Interchange modernization project this month. Commuters heading through Downtown Cleveland will encounter significant shifts and restrictions on I-90 between East 9th Street and Carnegie Avenue. Bridge replacement work is currently impacting the ramps connecting I-77 North to I-90 West. Motorists should anticipate narrow lanes and frequent traffic shifts in this zone. Additionally, the East 22nd Street bridge over I-90 remains a primary focus of work, with periodic short-term closures of the highway below during off-peak hours for safety.

West Side and Arterial Roadworks

  • I-90 Bi-Directional Zone: On the West Side, I-90 eastbound between Wagar Road and West 73rd Street is operating under a bi-directional traffic pattern. While all lanes are being maintained, drivers must stay alert to the crossover configuration which will remain in place through the 2026 construction season.
  • Carnegie Avenue: Rehabilitation work continues between East 79th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. One lane of traffic is maintained in each direction, but heavy delays are common during midday hours.
  • I-77 Ramps: The southbound entrance and exit ramps to Wallings Road remain closed for reconstruction. A detour using Pleasant Valley Road and Broadview Road is recommended.

Special Event Traffic

Traffic near the Huntington Convention Center is expected to be heavier than usual as the city hosts the Team USA Fencing North American Cup. In the evening, the Winter Warmer Fest on the city's near west side will likely increase local congestion and limit parking availability in the surrounding neighborhoods. Drivers are encouraged to utilize the newly launched RTA Commuter Alerts system for real-time text updates on rail status throughout the day.
