Major Lane Reductions on I-90 and MLK Jr. Drive to Impact Friday Commute

Cleveland Commute Overview: Friday, February 27, 2026

Cleveland commuters should prepare for significant travel delays today as several major infrastructure projects enter critical phases. With active work zones spanning from the West Side interstates to the University Circle area, the Friday morning and afternoon rush hours are expected to be slower than usual. Road officials recommend leaving at least 15 to 20 minutes early to navigate the current restrictions.

Major Highway and Interstate Alerts

The ongoing I-90 Major Rehabilitation project continues to be the primary source of congestion for those traveling between the West Side and Downtown. Motorists should be aware of the following:

  • I-90 Westside Rehab: Eastbound traffic on I-90 remains reduced from four lanes to three between Hilliard Boulevard and Alger Road. This restriction is part of a long-term pavement replacement project and is expected to cause heavy backup during the morning commute.
  • I-77 at Wallings Road: In Broadview Heights, Wallings Road remains closed between West Mill Road and Mill Road for bridge widening. I-77 southbound entrance and exit ramps at Wallings Road are also closed. Commuters are advised to detour using Pleasant Valley Road.
  • Jennings Freeway (SR 176): The exit ramp from SR 176 northbound to West 14th Street and Steelyard Commons is currently undergoing bridge deck replacement. Drivers heading to the Steelyard area should follow posted detours as this work nears its scheduled spring completion.

Downtown and Local Road Closures

City street projects are also impacting traffic flow today, particularly for those heading toward the Central Interchange or University Circle:

  • Carnegie Avenue: Significant westbound lane restrictions are in place on Carnegie Avenue between East 28th and East 22nd Streets. This work began earlier this week and is expected to last through the end of the month, affecting access to the Innerbelt.
  • MLK Jr. Drive: Northbound lanes on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between Cedar Avenue and Euclid Avenue are closed. This closure, which began yesterday, is necessary for the construction of the new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building at Case Western Reserve University and will remain a factor through the summer.
  • Ward 8 Pipeline Work: Infrastructure replacement continues on East 91st and East 92nd Streets near St. Clair Avenue. While two-way traffic is being maintained with flaggers, expect intermittent stops between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Public Transit and RTA Updates

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is operating on a standard Friday schedule today. While there are no major service disruptions reported for the Red, Blue, or Green rail lines, approximately seven bus routes are currently operating with minor detours due to localized roadwork. Riders are encouraged to check the Transit app for real-time arrival data. Looking ahead, riders should remain aware of upcoming discussions regarding service adjustments proposed for the summer 2026 schedule.
