Smooth Highway Flow Tempered by Surface Street Constraints

For those heading out in Cleveland this Saturday, February 28, 2026, the commute is largely defined by long-term infrastructure rehabilitation and a significant new lane closure near University Circle. While the regional expressways are moving at typical weekend speeds, surface street drivers should prepare for localized bottlenecks near the city's major medical and educational hubs.

University Circle Alert: Carnegie and MLK Jr. Drive

The most significant impact to local travel today centers on the University Circle area. Following the recent start of construction for Case Western Reserve University’s new Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building, a northbound lane closure is in effect on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between Cedar Avenue and Euclid Avenue. This restriction began earlier this week and is expected to persist through August 2026.

Simultaneously, the Carnegie Avenue Rehabilitation Phase 2 project continues to restrict travel between East 79th Street and MLK Jr. Drive. Crews are currently maintaining only one lane of traffic in each direction as they reconstruct the southern portion of the roadway. Local drivers are encouraged to utilize Chester Avenue or Euclid Avenue as alternatives to avoid delays during peak midday hours.

Highway and Ramp Updates

On the major arteries, the I-90 Eastbound corridor remains reduced to three lanes between Hillard Blvd. and Alger Rd. as part of a major multi-year rehabilitation project. Additionally, commuters should keep the following closures in mind:

  • SR-176 North: The exit ramp to West 14th Street (providing access to Steelyard Commons) and I-71 South remains closed for bridge deck replacement. Completion is not expected until later this spring.
  • Wallings Road: The bridge over I-77 in the Broadview Heights area remains closed for widening. Drivers are advised to follow the detour via Pleasant Valley Road.
  • I-90 Westbound: Various lane shifts and restrictions are in place between West Blvd. and Hillard Blvd. for ongoing pavement work.

Public Transit and Airport Information

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is continuing its system-wide platform extension project. As the agency prepares for the first of its new rail cars to arrive later this year, riders on the Red Line may encounter construction equipment and temporary boarding zones at several stations. While no major service disruptions are reported for today, riders should allow for an extra 5-10 minutes of travel time.

For those traveling via Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE), flight operations are running on schedule. Security wait times at North, Central, and South checkpoints are currently under 15 minutes. However, travelers should remain aware that the airport continues to operate amid a partial federal government shutdown, though TSA PreCheck and screening services remain fully functional.
