Morning Commute Overview for Thursday, January 29, 2026

Cleveland commuters are facing a challenging morning as a persistent winter storm continues to impact Northeast Ohio. With lake-effect snow bands moving through the region and a Level 2 Snow Emergency currently in effect for Cuyahoga County, residents are advised to limit travel to essential trips only. Road conditions remain slick, and visibility is significantly reduced on major arteries, particularly along the I-90 corridor.

Major Roadwork and Highway Delays

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) reports several ongoing projects that, combined with the current weather, are creating bottleneck conditions. Key impact areas for today include:

  • I-90 Lake County: A mandatory speed reduction to 40 mph is in place between Route 44 and Vrooman Road due to heavy snow accumulation and ice.
  • I-90 Eastbound: Traffic is reduced to three lanes between Hillard Blvd and Alger Road for long-term pavement replacement. Commuters traveling from the west side should expect an additional 15 to 20 minutes of travel time.
  • I-77 at Wallings Road: The bridge replacement project has reached a critical phase. Wallings Road remains closed between West Mill Road and Mill Road. Additionally, the I-77 southbound entrance and exit ramps to Wallings Road are closed, with detours routed through Pleasant Valley Road.
  • SR-176 Northbound: The exit ramp to West 14th Street and Steelyard Commons remains closed for bridge deck replacement. Drivers heading toward the Steelyard area must use alternative routes via I-71.

GCRTA Public Transit Alerts

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has activated its Winterization Plan to combat the extreme cold and snowfall. For today, Thursday, January 29, riders should be aware of the following service disruptions:

  • Red Line Maintenance: Scheduled track maintenance is occurring between the West Blvd-Cudell Station and the West 25th-Ohio City Station. This work will require single-tracking between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., leading to potential delays for mid-day travelers.
  • Service Frequency: Due to the impact of sub-zero temperatures on rail equipment, Red Line trains are currently operating on a reduced 30-minute frequency until further notice.
  • Bus Service: While most bus routes are running, riders should expect delays of 10 to 15 minutes as drivers navigate unplowed secondary streets.

Commuter Safety Recommendations

Safety officials remind drivers to give snowplows ample room to work—ODOT currently has over 275 trucks deployed across Northeast Ohio. If you must be on the roads, ensure your vehicle is cleared of snow and your headlights are on. For those using public transit, use the Transit App to track real-time arrivals as schedules remain fluid throughout the day.
