Commuter Summary for Sunday, February 1, 2026

Cleveland motorists should prepare for a mix of long-term construction impacts and residual winter driving conditions this Sunday. While weekend traffic volumes are typically lighter than the weekday rush, major artery restrictions in the Broadview Heights and Lakewood corridors continue to necessitate extra travel time for those navigating the metro area.

Major Highway Restrictions and Detours

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 12 has several active work zones that will impact travel throughout the day. Drivers are encouraged to plan routes in advance to avoid the following bottlenecks:

  • I-77 and Wallings Road: The Wallings Road bridge over I-77 remains completely closed for replacement and widening. This closure extends between West Mill Road and Mill Road and is expected to remain in place through April 2026. Crucially, the I-77 southbound entrance and exit ramps at Wallings Road are also closed. Commuters are advised to use the established detour via Pleasant Valley Road, utilizing Brecksville Road to the east and Broadview Road to the west.
  • I-90 Pavement Replacement: On the city’s west side, I-90 eastbound is reduced to three lanes between Hillard Boulevard and Alger Road. This restriction is part of a major rehabilitation project scheduled to continue through November 2026. Expect slower speeds through the Rocky River and Lakewood stretches.
  • Bridge Repairs: Motorists should also watch for various lane restrictions on I-90 near West 140th Street and Berea Road. These bridge repair operations are part of a multi-year project extending through 2028, and while lanes are maintained, the shifts can cause minor weekend clustering.

RTA Public Transit Updates

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) continues to operate its standard Sunday schedule, though riders should be aware of recent system-wide policy changes and the current fiscal climate:

  • Wi-Fi Discontinuation: As of late December 2025, GCRTA has officially discontinued customer Wi-Fi services across all buses, trolleys, and trains. Riders planning to use transit for work or entertainment should ensure they have independent mobile data access.
  • Service Outlook: The agency is currently navigating a significant budget challenge attributed to rising healthcare costs. While service reductions are projected to begin later in the year, today’s schedules remain active. Riders are encouraged to monitor the official Transit app for any immediate delays caused by local maintenance or staffing adjustments.

Weather and Safety Precautions

In the wake of the recent impacts from Winter Storm Fern, road surfaces may still harbor patchy ice, particularly on elevated ramps and secondary roads that receive less sunlight. With temperatures remaining low, it is essential to check your vehicle's tire pressure and battery health. Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay extra attention when driving through active work zones, as bridge deck sealing and miscellaneous maintenance may occur whenever weather permits.
