Red Line Delays and Major Roadwork Impacts: Cleveland Commute Update for Monday, Feb. 9

Morning Commute Overview
Commuters in the Greater Cleveland area should prepare for significant transit delays and ongoing highway construction as we begin the work week on Monday, February 9, 2026. With sub-freezing temperatures impacting infrastructure and several major rail and road projects reaching critical phases, adding extra travel time is strongly advised.
RTA Rail and Public Transit Alerts
The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has issued a major service alert for the Red Line. Due to scheduled track maintenance and complications from the current cold snap, Red Line rail service is operating on a reduced 30-minute frequency. This schedule is expected to remain in place through the end of service today, February 9. Additionally, riders should be aware of the following:
- Cold Weather Delays: System-wide rail delays are possible due to the extreme low temperatures affecting signal and switch operations.
- Station Impacts: The elevator at the Louis Stokes-Windermere Station remains out of service for repairs.
- Tower City Adjustments: Ongoing service track adjustments continue for both eastbound and westbound trains at the Tower City hub.
Highway and Arterial Roadwork
Several major corridors are currently restricted due to long-term Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) projects:
- Interstate 90: I-90 eastbound between Hillard Blvd. and Alger Rd. remains reduced to three lanes for pavement replacement. This restriction will persist through late 2026.
- State Route 176 (Jennings Freeway): Northbound lanes between Steelyard Rd. and I-71 are experiencing lane shifts and various restrictions for the bridge deck replacement project, which is slated for completion this May.
- I-77 and Wallings Road: In Broadview Heights, Wallings Rd. remains closed over I-77. Southbound entrance and exit ramps at this interchange are also closed, with detours directed toward Pleasant Valley Rd.
- Snow Road Area: The SR 237 bridge over Snow Rd. in Brook Park has active lane width reductions and shoulder restrictions.
Airport Traffic and Construction
Travelers heading to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) face increased congestion on the terminal roadways. A major tunnel rehabilitation project on the Lower Roadway (Arrivals) has limited pickup and drop-off points to doors 5, 6, and 7. Officials recommend using the Upper Roadway (Departures) for all passenger transfers to avoid the heaviest delays.
Commuter Advice
With temperatures remaining low, road surfaces may be brittle or slick in areas. Transit users should use the RTA Transit App for real-time bus and rail tracking, while drivers are encouraged to check OHGO for live camera feeds before heading out.
