Record Cold and RTA Delays Create Challenging Saturday Commute

Record Cold Impacts Greater Cleveland Transit
Commuters in Cleveland are facing a harsh start to the weekend as a Weather Impact Alert has been issued for record-setting cold temperatures today, Saturday, January 31, 2026. Following recent heavy snowfall, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) has activated its Winterization Plan to maintain essential services. However, the extreme temperatures are taking a toll on infrastructure, particularly for rail commuters.
The GCRTA reports that the Red Line is currently operating on a 30-minute frequency until further notice due to the impact of the cold on train equipment. Specialized "snow trains" are active across the Red, Blue, and Green lines to keep the tracks clear and prevent ice buildup on overhead power lines. While Blue and Green Line trains are currently maintaining a normal schedule, riders should expect significant delays throughout the morning. Additionally, due to a regional shortage of rock salt, the GCRTA has cautioned that while all station parking lots are being plowed, they may not be fully salted today.
Major Highway Closures and Roadworks
Motorists navigating the interstate system should be aware of several long-term construction projects that continue to affect traffic flow despite the freezing conditions:
- I-90 Major Rehabilitation: Pavement replacement continues on I-90 Eastbound between Hilliard Boulevard and Alger Road. The highway is reduced to three lanes through this stretch, with various lane shifts in effect between West Boulevard and Hilliard.
- I-480 / I-77 Interchange: Bridge deck replacement work is active at this major junction. Drivers should anticipate continued restrictions on the ramps connecting I-480 Eastbound to I-77 Northbound and I-480 Westbound to I-77 Southbound. Detours remain in place using Transportation Boulevard and State Route 17.
- I-77 Bridge Work: In Broadview Heights, Wallings Road remains closed over I-77 for bridge replacement and interchange widening. Restrictions and shoulder closures are also present on I-77 itself beneath the bridge.
- SR 176 (Jennings Freeway): The northbound exit ramp to West 14th Street and the Steelyard Commons area is currently closed for deck replacement, impacting access to I-71 Southbound from the freeway.
Downtown and Safety Reminders
Cleanup and localized traffic adjustments may still be present in the downtown area following significant public demonstrations on Friday. While most main thoroughfares near Public Square are open, residual equipment and a heavy police presence remain in place. For those who must travel, officials recommend checking the Transit App for real-time rail updates and allowing an extra 20 to 30 minutes for any cross-town commute. Ensure vehicles are winter-ready as temperatures are expected to plummet further after sunset.
