Emergency Warming Centers Active Through Tonight

Due to the ongoing period of extreme cold and sub-zero wind chills affecting the region, the City of Cleveland has extended the operation of emergency warming centers through Sunday, February 1, 2026. These facilities are intended to provide a safe, heated environment for residents lacking adequate home heating. The following recreation centers are currently open as warming spaces until 10:00 PM tonight:

  • Michael Zone Recreation Center: 6301 Lorain Avenue
  • Sterling Recreation Center: 1380 East 32nd Street
  • Zelma George Recreation Center: 3155 Martin L. King Boulevard
  • Collinwood Recreation Center: 16300 Lakeshore Boulevard

Residents requiring overnight shelter after 10:00 PM may request Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) passes at these locations to facilitate transportation to nearby overnight facilities.

Public Service Announcement: New SNAP Work Requirements

Effective today, February 1, 2026, new federal regulations regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have officially taken effect. Under these updated rules, the definition of "able-bodied adults" has expanded to include individuals aged 18 to 64. To maintain eligibility for benefits, most adults in this age bracket are now required to complete at least 80 hours of work activities per month. This requirement can be met through traditional employment, approved job training, or community service programs. Residents who do not meet these requirements may be limited to three months of benefits within a three-year period unless they qualify for a specific exemption. For assistance with compliance and reporting, citizens should contact their local county social services representative.

Upcoming City Council Meeting and Public Comment

Cleveland City Council is scheduled to convene for its regular meeting on Monday, February 2, 2026, at Cleveland City Hall. This meeting follows the cancellation of the previous session due to inclement weather. Individuals who were previously registered for public comment slots at the late January meeting will retain their speaking positions for the February 2 session. Council will address various municipal ordinances, including proposed safety measures for healthcare workers and infrastructure updates.

Public Comment Opportunity: Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

The City of Cleveland, in partnership with the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA), remains in a public comment period regarding the proposed installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The proposal includes the addition of Level 2 chargers at the Michael Zone and Sterling Recreation Centers. This initiative aims to improve accessibility for EV owners in residential neighborhoods. Community members are encouraged to submit written feedback to the project planners before the comment period closes on February 6, 2026.

Reminder: Winter Waste Collection and Parking Rules

The Division of Waste Collection and Disposal reminds residents to adhere to winter set-out guidelines. All waste carts must be placed curbside no later than 6:00 AM on the scheduled collection day. During periods of significant snowfall, residents are urged to utilize off-street parking whenever possible to allow snowplows and waste collection vehicles clear access to city streets. Please ensure that carts are placed at least three feet apart to facilitate automated collection arms.
