Cleveland Traffic and Commute Overview

Good morning, Cleveland. For Sunday, February 15, 2026, commuters can expect a relatively quiet morning on the roads, but several long-term infrastructure projects and significant bridge closures remain in effect. While highway volume is light today, those traveling through Broadview Heights or University Circle should prepare for detours. With temperatures hovering below freezing, drivers are also cautioned to watch for black ice on elevated surfaces and overpasses.

Highway Alerts: I-77 and I-90 Restrictions

The most significant disruption this weekend continues to be the Wallings Road bridge project in the southern suburbs. The bridge over I-77 is completely closed for replacement and widening. This impact extends to the highway itself, where I-77 southbound entrance and exit ramps at Wallings Road are inaccessible. Commuters are advised to use Pleasant Valley Road as the primary detour, utilizing Brecksville Road to the east and Broadview Road to the west of the closure. These restrictions are expected to remain in place through April 2026.

On the west side, the major rehabilitation of I-90 between Hilliard Boulevard and West Boulevard is ongoing. Currently, I-90 eastbound is reduced to three lanes between Hilliard Boulevard and Alger Road. Additionally, maintenance work on the West 140th Street and Berea Road bridges passing under the interstate may result in intermittent lane shifts and shoulder closures throughout the day.

University Circle and Local Roadworks

Drivers heading toward the medical and cultural hubs in University Circle will encounter significant work on Carnegie Avenue. Phase 2 of the Carnegie Avenue Rehabilitation project is active between East 79th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The city is maintaining only one lane of westbound traffic and one lane of eastbound traffic in this corridor. Occasional eastbound detours may be present between East 89th and East 90th streets to accommodate construction at the Cleveland Clinic campus.

Residents near St. Clair Avenue should also note that preparatory signage is being installed for the East 91st Street pipeline replacement project, which is scheduled to begin full operations tomorrow morning. Expect minor lane narrowing in that area today.

GCRTA Public Transit Updates

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is operating on a standard Sunday schedule today. However, several bus lines are operating with reroutes due to local construction projects:

  • Route 18 (West 98 - Garfield): Rerouted near Warner Road due to ongoing infrastructure improvements.
  • Route 22 (Lorain): Rerouted around West 210th Street construction zones.
  • Route 37 (Hayden - East 185): Adjusted service near East 156th Street.

Riders are also reminded that Monday, February 16, is President's Day, and the GCRTA will transition to a holiday service schedule starting tomorrow morning. Plan your Monday commute accordingly if you rely on rail or bus transit for work.
