Major Closure of U.S. 6 Over I-271 and Bridge Repairs Impact Monday Commute

Monday Morning Traffic Overview

Good morning, Cleveland. As we begin the first work week of March 2026, commuters in the Greater Cleveland area should prepare for significant new traffic patterns and long-term closures starting today, Monday, March 2. State transportation officials have activated several major project phases that will affect travel times, particularly for those moving between the eastern suburbs and the downtown core. While the morning rush is currently moving at expected volumes, the introduction of new detours requires extra patience and planning.

Major Closures and Regional Roadwork

The most significant impact today is the full closure of the U.S. Route 6 (Chardon Road) bridge over I-271 in the Willoughby Hills and Highland Heights area. This closure is scheduled to last through October 2026 as crews work on a total bridge replacement. Commuters who normally use this artery are being detoured via SOM Center Road to I-90, then to U.S. 20 and Richmond Avenue. Additionally, I-271 itself under U.S. 6 will experience various lane restrictions throughout the day.

On the west side, the major rehabilitation of I-90 continues to affect the flow of traffic. I-90 eastbound between Hillard Boulevard and Alger Road remains reduced to three lanes, a restriction that will persist through late 2026. Drivers should also remain alert on the SR 176 (Jennings Freeway) northbound, where lane restrictions and traffic shifts are in place between Steel Yard Road and I-71 for ongoing bridge deck replacement.

City Street Alerts and Pipeline Projects

Within the city limits, the Carnegie Avenue Rehabilitation Phase 2 project is in full swing. One lane of traffic is being maintained in each direction on Carnegie Avenue between East 79th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Furthermore, MLK Jr. Drive has a northbound lane closure between Cedar Avenue and Euclid Avenue to accommodate construction near the Case Western Reserve University campus. In Ward 8, Enbridge Gas Ohio continues its pipeline infrastructure replacement project on East 91st and East 92nd Streets near St. Clair Avenue. While two-way traffic is maintained, flaggers are present between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., which may cause intermittent local delays.

Greater Cleveland RTA and Transit Notices

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is currently operating on its standard weekday schedule, but riders should stay informed about potential service adjustments later this year as the agency navigates budget discussions. Looking ahead to the coming weekend, riders are reminded that Red Line service between Brookpark and Airport stations will be replaced by 66R buses this Saturday, March 7, for scheduled maintenance. For today’s commute, all rail lines and bus routes are reporting on-time performance.

Commuter Safety Tips

With several new work zones established this morning, the Cleveland Division of Police reminds all travelers to use extreme caution. Construction zones invariably present hazards, and the safety of both workers and motorists is a priority. Please avoid distracted driving and allow for at least ten minutes of extra travel time if your route includes I-271 or the Chardon Road area.
