Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters heading into Cleveland this Wednesday, March 11, 2026, should prepare for a mix of ongoing construction impacts and new transit adjustments. While the overnight closure of the State Route 176 northbound ramp to I-90 westbound was scheduled to conclude at 5:00 a.m. today, residual congestion may linger in the area as morning volume increases. Major arteries, particularly on the west side, remain under heavy long-term construction as part of the I-90 rehabilitation initiative.

West Side Highway Projects

The Interstate 90 corridor continues to be the primary focus for roadworks. Motorists traveling between Wagar Road and West 73rd Street will encounter a bi-directional traffic pattern. Although all lanes are being maintained, the shifted alignment requires extra caution. Specifically, eastbound drivers intending to exit between Wagar and West 73rd must stay in the right two lanes, while through traffic should stick to the left. Additionally, I-90 eastbound is reduced to three lanes between Hilliard Boulevard and Alger Road, a restriction expected to remain in place through the end of the year.

Downtown and University Circle Alerts

In the city center and University Circle, local projects are affecting surface street flow. Carnegie Avenue remains limited to one lane in each direction between East 79th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive due to the ongoing Phase 2 rehabilitation project. Nearby, MLK Jr. Drive has a northbound lane closure between Cedar Avenue and Euclid Avenue to facilitate the construction of the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building. Travelers should also watch for prep work around the I-90 Central Interchange, particularly near Carnegie between East 28th and East 22nd Streets.

Public Transit Reroutes

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) has issued several active alerts for Wednesday. Most notably, sinkhole-related reroutes that went into effect earlier this week continue to impact multiple lines. Commuters using the 1 (St. Clair), 3 (Superior), 14-14A (Kinsman), 15 (Union-Harvard), 77 (Brecksville), and 90 (Broadway-Libby) routes should expect adjusted stop locations and minor delays. Furthermore, the 26-26A (Detroit) route remains on a detour due to a sewer construction project. Transit riders are encouraged to use real-time tracking apps to monitor these service changes.

Commuter Recommendations

  • Allow an extra 10-15 minutes if your route involves I-90 on the west side.
  • Use Euclid Avenue or Chester Avenue as alternatives to Carnegie through University Circle.
  • Verify GCRTA bus stop locations before heading out, as several downtown stops are temporarily bypassed.
