Lane Restrictions on Carnegie Ave and I-90 Highlight Tuesday Morning Commute

Morning Traffic Overview

Commuters in Cleveland should prepare for a slow start this morning, Tuesday, February 24, 2026. While the winter weather advisory for Cuyahoga County expired at 1:00 AM, temperatures remain well below freezing, hovering around 17°F. Residual moisture on the roads may lead to slick spots during the early hours, and drivers are urged to exercise caution on bridges and overpasses.

Major Roadworks and Closures

Several significant construction projects and lane restrictions are active today, potentially impacting key arteries during peak hours:

  • Carnegie Avenue: Heavy delays are expected between East 22nd and East 28th Streets. Westbound lane restrictions began yesterday and remain in effect through the end of February for rehabilitation work. Further east, the stretch between East 79th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive continues to be limited to one lane in each direction.
  • I-90 Rehabilitation: On the city's west side, I-90 eastbound between Hilliard Boulevard and Alger Road remains reduced to three lanes. This long-term project continues to cause bottlenecks during the morning rush as traffic merges into the narrower configuration.
  • I-77 and Wallings Road: The bridge replacement project at Wallings Road is still active. Wallings Road remains closed over the interstate, and the southbound I-77 entrance and exit ramps at this location are offline. Detours are posted via Pleasant Valley Road.
  • US-6 and I-271: Travelers in the eastern suburbs should note new lane restrictions on US-6 over I-271 and on I-271 itself near the US-6 interchange. These restrictions were implemented yesterday and are part of a bridge and pavement improvement initiative scheduled to continue through the year.
  • Local Utility Work: In Ward 8, the pipeline infrastructure replacement project continues on East 91st and East 92nd Streets between St. Clair Avenue and Hillcock Avenue. While two-way traffic is maintained, flaggers are on-site to direct vehicles through work zones.

Public Transport Alerts

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) reports several active rider alerts today. While major rail lines are currently operating, passengers should check the Transit app or the GCRTA website for specific updates on the following:

  • Rail Service: Six active alerts are listed for the rail system, primarily involving maintenance and facility updates.
  • Bus and BRT: Surface routes and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) are experiencing localized delays due to the Carnegie Avenue construction.
  • Amenities: Commuters are reminded that free Wi-Fi service on all buses, trains, and trolleys was discontinued earlier this year as part of system-wide budget adjustments.

Drivers should plan for an additional 10-15 minutes of travel time if their route includes Carnegie Avenue or the I-90/I-77 corridors. Stay safe and monitor local conditions as the clouds persist throughout the day.
