Lane Reductions on I-90 and Major Ramp Closures at I-480/I-77 Interchange

Cleveland Commute Update: Major Disruptions on I-90 and I-77 Interchanges

Commuters heading into the city this Wednesday morning, February 18, 2026, should prepare for significant travel time increases due to several long-term infrastructure projects hitting critical phases. From major interstate rehabilitation to localized utility work, the Cleveland morning drive is currently facing multiple bottlenecks that require early departures or alternate routing.

Interstate and Highway Disruptions

  • I-90 Major Rehabilitation: Heavy congestion is expected on I-90 Eastbound between Hillard Boulevard and Alger Road. The roadway is currently reduced to three lanes as part of an ongoing pavement replacement project that will continue through November 2026. Drivers in the West Blvd and Hillard area should also stay alert for various lane shifts and short-duration ramp closures.
  • I-480/I-77 Interchange: A major detour remains in effect for those moving between I-480 and I-77. The ramps from I-480 Eastbound to I-77 Northbound and I-480 Westbound to I-77 Southbound are closed. These closures are slated to last through the summer of 2026, so travelers are urged to follow posted detour signs via Transportation Boulevard or Brookpark Road.
  • I-77 at Wallings Road: In Broadview Heights, Wallings Road remains closed between West Mill Road and Mill Road for bridge replacement. The I-77 Southbound entrance and exit ramps at Wallings are also inaccessible through April 2026. I-77 itself is subject to various lane restrictions under the bridge for ongoing widening work.
  • SR-176 North Ramp: The ramp from SR-176 Northbound to West 14th Street and the Steelyard Commons area is currently closed. This closure also impacts access from SR-176 to I-71 Southbound as part of a deck replacement project scheduled for completion this spring.

Local Roadworks and Utility Projects

On the city's East Side, a significant pipeline infrastructure replacement project by Enbridge Gas Ohio is now underway. Work began earlier this week on East 91st Street and East 92nd Street near St. Clair Avenue. While the work zones allow for two-way traffic, control personnel are on-site to direct flow between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Expect delays in Ward 8 as crews replace steel mainlines with new plastic infrastructure through April.

GCRTA Public Transit Alerts

Public transit users should note that this is Ohio Loves Transit Week (February 16–20). While major service reductions are not scheduled to begin until this summer, riders may experience minor delays due to ongoing maintenance associated with the system-wide Railcar Replacement Program. Currently, the GCRTA reports that 15-minute service on the Red Line has been restored, though commuters should monitor individual route alerts for specific bus line deviations near the downtown Innerbelt construction zones.

Commuter Recommendation

For those traveling from the southern suburbs, using the I-271 corridor may provide a smoother alternative to I-77, though I-271 Northbound near Shaker Boulevard continues to have its own set of lane restrictions. Always allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes for commutes through the I-90/I-77 Central Interchange where modernization work is intensifying this month.
