Morning Commute Update: Highway Restrictions and Transit Changes

Good morning, Cleveland. For this Thursday, February 5, 2026, commuters should prepare for significant lane restrictions on the west side and unexpected frequency changes on the RTA Red Line. While major stabilization work at Irishtown Bend was completed earlier this week, several long-term infrastructure projects and recent service updates are heavily impacting travel times this morning.

Major Highway and Roadwork Alerts

  • I-90 Major Rehabilitation (West Side): Traffic on I-90 eastbound between Hilliard Blvd. and Alger Rd. remains reduced to three lanes. This is part of the ongoing $173 million pavement replacement project stretching from Rocky River through Lakewood and into Cleveland. Motorists should expect heavy congestion and merging delays during peak hours through the fall of 2026.
  • I-77 and Wallings Road: In Broadview Heights, Wallings Road is closed between West Mill Road and Mill Road for a bridge replacement project. Critically, the I-77 southbound entrance and exit ramps at Wallings Road are also closed. Detours are currently directed to Pleasant Valley Road via Brecksville Road.
  • State Route 176 (Jennings Freeway): The exit ramp from SR 176 northbound to West 14th Street and Steelyard Commons is closed for bridge deck replacement. Commuters seeking to reach Steelyard Commons are advised to use I-71 or local detours until the project's expected completion in May.
  • Snow Road Bridge Work: In Brook Park, the replacement of the SR 237 bridge over Snow Road continues to cause various lane shifts and restrictions near the airport corridor.

Public Transit: RTA and New Bus Terminal Updates

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) has issued a service alert for the Red Line. Due to maintenance, Red Line rail service is currently operating on a reduced 30-minute frequency. This schedule is expected to remain in place through the end of service on Monday, February 9. Riders should account for extra wait times at all stations between Hopkins International Airport and Windermere.

Commuters using intercity transit should also note that as of yesterday, February 4, all Greyhound, Barons Bus, and GoBus operations have officially moved to the new terminal at 17510 Brookpark Road. The new facility is located immediately adjacent to the Brookpark Rapid Station, allowing for seamless transfers to RTA rail, but travelers are reminded that the old Chester Avenue station is no longer in service.

Commuter Advice

With the recent stabilization of the Irishtown Bend hillside, traffic patterns on West 25th Street have stabilized, but minor equipment removal near the Detroit-Superior Bridge may cause brief interruptions. For those heading downtown from the south, utilize I-77 but plan for volume delays at the I-480 interchange where ramp preservation work is ongoing. As always, stay alert for crews in the I-90 construction zones.
