Heavy Snow and Emergency Parking Bans: Winter Storm Impacts Cleveland Commutes

Snow Emergency and Hazardous Road Conditions
Cleveland is currently grappling with a significant winter storm that is creating hazardous travel conditions across Northeast Ohio today, Saturday, January 24, 2026. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, with heavy snow and bitter cold making main arteries difficult to navigate. City officials and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) have warned that traditional rock salt is less effective due to temperatures dropping below 15 degrees. In response, crews are utilizing a brine and "Beet Heet" mixture to treat high-risk intersections and highway ramps.
Major Artery and Construction Updates
Commuters should expect significant delays on major highways due to a combination of weather-related slowdowns and ongoing long-term construction projects. Key areas of concern include:
- Interstate 90: Eastbound traffic is reduced to three lanes between Hilliard Blvd. and Alger Rd. for pavement replacement. Expect heavy congestion near Lakewood and Rocky River as plows work to keep lanes clear.
- Interstate 77: The bridge replacement project at Wallings Road continues to impact the south side commute. Wallings Road and the associated I-77 entrance and exit ramps remain closed. Traffic is being detoured via Pleasant Valley Road.
- State Route 176 (Jennings Freeway): Bridge deck replacement near Steelyard Road is ongoing, restricting flow for those traveling toward I-71 and downtown.
- State Route 237: Bridge work over Snow Road in Brook Park may cause additional bottlenecks for those heading toward Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.
RTA Service and Public Transport Alerts
The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) has activated its Winterization Plan through Monday. To maintain rail service, "snow trains" are currently operating on the Red, Blue, and Green lines to clear tracks and prevent ice buildup on overhead power lines. While rail and bus services are operational, GCRTA has advised passengers to expect delays across all routes due to the extreme cold and heavy snowfall. Note that while RTA parking lots are being plowed, salt application is limited due to a region-wide salt shortage.
Mandatory Parking Bans and Safety Advice
To assist snow removal efforts, a Snow Emergency Parking Ban for the City of Cleveland takes effect at 7:00 PM tonight and will remain in place until Monday evening. Parking is strictly prohibited on all designated Snow Emergency streets marked with red and white signs. Similar bans began earlier today in Cleveland Heights, Newburgh Heights, and across Lorain County. Vehicles left on these routes are subject to immediate towing to ensure plows can clear emergency paths for medical and fire services. If travel is not essential, residents are urged to stay home until conditions improve.
