Expect Red Line Delays and Major Wallings Road Closures This Sunday

Sunday Morning Traffic and Transit Overview
Good morning, Cleveland. For those planning to navigate the city today, Sunday, February 8, 2026, several significant infrastructure projects and service adjustments are in effect. While Sunday morning traffic typically remains light, long-term bridge rehabilitations and public transit maintenance will necessitate extra travel time for commuters and those attending events at the I-X Center or Playhouse Square.
GCRTA Red Line Service Alert
The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) has issued a critical service update for the Red Line rail system. As of this morning, trains are operating on a reduced 30-minute frequency. This service adjustment is expected to remain in place through the end of service on Monday, February 9. If you are using the Red Line to travel between Windermere and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, please account for significant wait times and check the real-time departure schedule before arriving at your station.
Major Highway Impacts and Roadworks
The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) continues to move forward with several major interstate projects in Cuyahoga County. Motorists should be aware of the following restrictions:
- I-77 at Wallings Road: The bridge replacement and interchange improvement project in Broadview Heights remains highly active. Wallings Road is currently closed to all through traffic between West Mill Road and Mill Road. Additionally, both the southbound entrance and exit ramps for I-77 at Wallings Road are closed. Motorists should follow the posted detour using Pleasant Valley Road, Brecksville Road, and Broadview Road. Expect lane shifts and shoulder closures on I-77 itself directly under the bridge site.
- I-90 Eastbound Pavement Replacement: On the West Side, I-90 eastbound remains reduced to three lanes between Hilliard Boulevard and Alger Road. This reduction is part of a major rehabilitation effort slated to continue through late 2026. While traffic flows generally well on Sundays, merging delays can occur near the Hilliard exit.
- State Route 176: Work is nearing completion on the bridge deck replacement for the Route 176 northbound exit ramp to West 14th Street and Steelyard Commons. Drivers should still exercise extreme caution in this area as crews finalize construction activities.
Local Event Congestion
Beyond the highway system, localized congestion is expected in two primary areas today. The Great Big Home + Garden Show is underway at the I-X Center, which will likely cause heavy volume on Brookpark Road and the surrounding airport access routes throughout the afternoon. In the downtown district, Playhouse Square will be a hub of activity with multiple performances of the musical "Suffs" scheduled for 3:00 PM and 6:30 PM. Pedestrians and drivers should expect tighter parking and slow-moving traffic around East 14th Street and Euclid Avenue.
Overall, if your commute involves the southern I-77 corridor or the rail system, we recommend allowing an additional 20 minutes to reach your destination safely.
