Allegations broaden as pretrial litigation continues

New court filings in federal criminal proceedings have expanded the scope of allegations against Cleveland Guardians reliever Emmanuel Clase, with defense filings in a related case asserting the suspected misconduct involved far more games than previously outlined in the government’s charging documents. Clase and fellow pitcher Luis Ortiz have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The cases center on claims that the players accepted bribes intended to influence discrete in-game outcomes connected to proposition betting, a market that can focus on individual pitches and is more vulnerable to manipulation than traditional game-result wagers. Prosecutors have alleged that gamblers sought predictable outcomes tied to pitch selection or results, and that the scheme generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in winnings.

What the latest filings claim

A recent filing submitted by counsel for Ortiz, seeking to separate his client’s case from Clase’s, asserts that the alleged conduct attributed to Clase spans 26 months and includes suspect pitches across 48 games. The same filing argues that trying the defendants together could prejudice Ortiz by associating him with a broader pattern of alleged conduct.

In addition to that claim, a separate court record reflects a judge’s direction that prosecutors provide discovery to Clase’s attorneys related to the pitches the government considers suspicious. The court record also notes that Clase has identified at least 250 pitches on which bets were placed, and the judge encouraged additional disclosures so the defense can prepare for trial.

Charges, bail conditions, and procedural timeline

Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to charges that include conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy, and conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery. The most serious wire-fraud-related counts carry potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison.

Clase was arrested in November 2025 and appeared in federal court in Brooklyn, where he was released on bond. Court-ordered conditions included surrendering his passport, restrictions on travel to New York and Ohio, an order to refrain from gambling, and GPS monitoring.

The case was set for a May 2026 trial date, with Ortiz’s attorney seeking additional time and arguing for severance.

MLB administrative response and team impact

Major League Baseball previously placed both pitchers on non-disciplinary paid leave while the league continued its sports-betting investigation. The team has stated it was informed no additional players or club personnel were expected to be impacted.

  • Emmanuel Clase: a multi-time All-Star reliever and former American League Reliever of the Year recipient.
  • Luis Ortiz: a right-hander who joined Cleveland in 2025 after earlier major-league experience elsewhere.

The defendants’ not-guilty pleas mean prosecutors must prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt at trial, while pretrial motions and discovery disputes continue shaping what evidence jurors may ultimately hear.

As the litigation proceeds, the evolving court record indicates prosecutors and defense attorneys are contesting not only the meaning of communications and betting patterns, but also the scale of the alleged conduct and whether the defendants should be tried together.
