Cleveland State men’s tennis opens 2026 home schedule with victories over Toledo and Division II Edinboro

Vikings split weekend road opener, then return to Cleveland for a doubleheader sweep
Cleveland State’s men’s tennis team opened its 2026 home slate on Monday, Jan. 19, with a pair of dual-match wins inside the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion, beating Toledo 4-3 and later adding a victory against Edinboro in the second match of the day.
The doubleheader followed Cleveland State’s season-opening road match at Penn State on Saturday, Jan. 17, a 6-1 loss in University Park. The early schedule sequence—one road test against a Big Ten opponent followed by two home matches in a single day—set an immediate benchmark for lineup depth and late-match execution.
Against Toledo: doubles point proves decisive in 4-3 finish
The opener against Toledo turned on Cleveland State’s ability to secure the doubles point and then piece together three singles victories to reach four team points. Cleveland State won at No. 1 doubles (Lincoln Battle and Carl Gedlitschka, 6-4) and No. 2 doubles (Maxime Aremon and Tristan Stine, 6-2) to go in front 1-0.
In singles, Gedlitschka extended the lead with a straight-sets win at No. 4 (6-1, 6-4), and Devin Boyer added a 6-4, 6-3 result at No. 6. Toledo answered with wins at No. 5, No. 3 and No. 1 to keep pressure on the match score. The clincher came at No. 2, where Nico Jamison won 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), pushing Cleveland State to the 4-3 final.
Final: Cleveland State 4, Toledo 3 (Jan. 19, 2026, Cleveland)
Key swing: Cleveland State captured the doubles point by winning on courts 1 and 2
Clinching court: No. 2 singles (Jamison)
Edinboro match adds nonconference depth test to early slate
The second match of the day brought a contrasting opponent profile: Edinboro competes in NCAA Division II and has recently played into the national postseason at that level. For Cleveland State, the pairing provided a format similar to many regular-season duals—fast turnaround, lineup management, and the need to maintain focus after a close first match.
Cleveland State’s scheduling approach early in the spring includes several doubleheaders and a mix of Division I and non–Division I opponents, a structure aimed at building match volume before conference play begins later in the season.
What’s next on the calendar
After the home-opening doubleheader, Cleveland State is scheduled to travel to Chicago for matches at DePaul on Jan. 23 and Northwestern on Jan. 24, before returning to Cleveland to host St. Bonaventure on Jan. 30. Horizon League play is slated to begin in March, and the conference championship is scheduled for April 24-26 in Cincinnati.
Results from the Jan. 19 doubleheader leave Cleveland State with early, match-tested experience in close duals before a road-heavy February.
