Cleveland Ohio Temple dedication set for August 2026, near Kirtland’s historic 1836 Latter-day Saint temple

Open house begins in June; dedication planned for mid-August
The Cleveland Ohio Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be dedicated on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, with a single 10 a.m. session and a 2 p.m. rebroadcast planned for the same day. The dedication will be broadcast to congregations in the temple district.
In advance of the dedication, a media day is scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2026, followed by invited-guest tours on June 16 and 17. A public open house is set for June 18 through July 3, excluding Sundays.
A new temple near a key early Latter-day Saint site
The announcement places a new temple in the Cleveland area within short driving distance of Kirtland, where the first temple built in the Latter Day Saint movement was dedicated in 1836 and remains one of Northeast Ohio’s most recognized religious landmarks.
Kirtland’s temple is distinct from the modern Latter-day Saint temples used for temple ordinances. It is operated as a historic site and has long served as a destination for public tours and religious heritage visitors. In March 2024, stewardship and ownership of the Kirtland Temple transferred from Community of Christ to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as part of a broader transaction involving multiple historic properties and artifacts.
What the open house means, and who it serves
Open houses are a standard feature of Latter-day Saint temple openings and typically provide a limited period of public access before the building is dedicated for religious use. After dedication, entry is generally reserved for members who meet church requirements.
The Cleveland-area open house is expected to draw:
- Local residents interested in architecture and civic development.
- Interfaith visitors and community leaders attending scheduled tours.
- Travelers connecting the temple visit with nearby Latter-day Saint historic sites in Kirtland and other Ohio locations linked to early church history.
Ohio’s expanding temple footprint
Ohio’s first operating temple, the Columbus Ohio Temple, was dedicated in 1999 and rededicated in 2023 after renovations. The Cleveland Ohio Temple will become the second operating Latter-day Saint temple in the state upon dedication, adding capacity for members in Northeast Ohio and surrounding areas.
Key dates: Media day June 15, 2026; public open house June 18–July 3, 2026; dedication Aug. 16, 2026.
With the dedication now scheduled, the Cleveland Ohio Temple moves from the construction-and-preparation phase into a defined public timeline—one that also reframes, in practical terms, how modern Latter-day Saint worship spaces and Ohio’s early Restoration-era sites will be experienced by residents and visitors in the same region.
