Intersection remains closed after roadway collapse near Justice Center

A major sinkhole that opened in downtown Cleveland on Sunday, March 8, 2026, continued to disrupt traffic into early week as crews worked to clear debris, assess damage and develop a repair plan. The collapse occurred at the intersection of West St. Clair Avenue and West 3rd Street, near the Cuyahoga County Justice Center, forcing an immediate closure of the intersection.

Police said the sinkhole partially trapped a vehicle. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was removed with assistance, and the driver was able to leave the area. The incident occurred during the morning hours and drew a rapid response from city and utility personnel.

Crews focused on stabilization and assessment

As of Monday, March 9, Cleveland Water Department crews were working at the site clearing broken pipes and deteriorated pavement from the opening while the city prepared a repair plan. Water service that had been shut off to nearby buildings was restored, indicating progress in stabilizing immediate utility impacts even as the roadway remained compromised.

City officials said a more detailed timeline for repairs and for how long the intersection will remain closed is expected once crews complete clearing the hole and evaluating the underlying damage. Officials have not publicly confirmed the cause of the collapse.

Transit impacts and detours

The closure prompted changes to public transportation operations in the downtown core. Several Greater Cleveland RTA bus routes were rerouted until further notice to avoid the closed intersection and surrounding blocks, reflecting the intersection’s role as a key connector between lakefront-adjacent traffic patterns and downtown streets.

  • The closure affects travel through West St. Clair Avenue and West 3rd Street, a corridor used by commuters, downtown workers and visitors to nearby civic buildings.
  • Bus service continued with detours as crews worked in the roadway and utilities corridor.

What is known—and what remains unresolved

Officials have not yet released findings on whether the sinkhole was triggered by a subsurface utility failure, roadway base erosion, or another structural issue beneath the pavement. The presence of broken pipes and the involvement of water crews suggest utility infrastructure is part of the response, but the city has not issued a definitive technical explanation.

City officials said additional details will be provided after the damage is fully assessed and a repair plan is finalized.

For now, the intersection remains closed while crews continue site work. Motorists should expect continued detours in the area until the city publishes a repair schedule and reopening estimate later this week.
