Public Safety Alert: Winter Storm Watch and Salt Shortage

The City of Cleveland and the National Weather Service have issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Greater Cleveland area, effective from Saturday night through Monday. Forecasters anticipate the heaviest snowfall to occur on Sunday, with significant accumulations likely to impact the Monday morning commute. Residents are advised to prepare for difficult travel conditions and sub-zero wind chills throughout the weekend.

In conjunction with the weather alert, the Department of Public Works has issued a public service announcement regarding a regional rock salt shortage caused by delivery delays from state-contracted suppliers. To manage limited supplies, the City has implemented a salt prioritization plan. Road crews will focus salting efforts on main thoroughfares, hills, major intersections, and routes near hospitals and schools. While crews will continue to plow all streets, including residential side roads, salting of residential streets may be suspended until deliveries resume. Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and maintain a safe distance from snowplows.

RTA Transit Service and Infrastructure Updates

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) reports that rail service on the Red, Blue, and Green lines has returned to normal operations between Tower City and the East 55th Street stations as of January 21, 2026. However, passengers should be aware of the following service notes:

  • Stokes-Windermere Station: The elevator at this station remains out of service for repairs.
  • Route 22 (Lorain): Continued construction on West 210th Street has necessitated ongoing bus reroutes for this line.
  • Hiring Events: RTA is currently accepting applications for transit police and bus mechanics, with information sessions scheduled for late January and early February.

Administrative Notices and Public Meetings

The City of Cleveland is conducting several official business meetings today, Thursday, January 22, 2026. Key notices include:

  • Public Utilities Pre-Bid Meeting: A virtual meeting is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. regarding cleaning services for Cleveland Public Power insulators and bushings.
  • Department of Public Works: A pre-bid session for the acquisition of monument-setting equipment for the Division of Motor Vehicle Maintenance is also set for 10:00 a.m.
  • Urban Forestry Commission: The Winter 2026 Public Meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at City Hall.

Community Health Advisory

The Cleveland Department of Public Health, in alignment with current CDC data, reports moderate levels of respiratory virus activity in the region. Seasonal influenza and RSV levels remain elevated. Health officials recommend that residents stay home if they feel ill and maintain up-to-date vaccinations to mitigate the spread of winter illnesses.
