Emergency Health Advisory: Severe Cold and Warming Center Activation

The City of Cleveland has issued an emergency health advisory due to a prolonged streak of bitter cold, with temperatures expected to remain below 20 degrees through the weekend of January 30, 2026. In response to these life-threatening conditions, the city has activated several recreation centers to serve as public warming spaces. These centers are scheduled to remain open through February 1, 2026.

  • Michael Zone Recreation Center: 6301 Lorain Avenue
  • Sterling Recreation Center: 1380 East 31st Street
  • Collinwood Recreation Center: 16300 Lakeshore Boulevard
  • EJ Kovacic Recreation Center: 6250 St. Clair Avenue

Warming centers operate from 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on weekdays. Residents seeking overnight shelter after 10:00 p.m. will be directed to available community partner facilities. Local officials report high demand for seasonal donations, specifically socks, coats, and hand warmers, to assist those in need during this record-setting cold snap.

City Council Meeting Rescheduling

Due to the persistent inclement weather and the closure of City Hall earlier this week, the Cleveland City Council regular meeting originally scheduled for Monday, January 26, was cancelled. Council will reconvene for its next regularly scheduled session on Monday, February 2, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. Individuals who were registered for public comment slots at the cancelled meeting will retain their speaking positions for the February 2 session. No new applications for public comment are being accepted for that date at this time.

Public Works: Official Pre-Bid Meeting Notice

The Department of Public Utilities has issued a notice for a non-mandatory pre-bid meeting scheduled for Friday, January 30, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. The meeting concerns Ordinance 492-2025, which involves the purchase of labor and materials for the maintenance and repair of electric motors, controls, transformers, and switchgears for the Division of Water. This meeting will be conducted virtually via Microsoft Teams. Official bids must be delivered to the Office of the Commissioner of Purchases and Supplies at City Hall before noon on February 19, 2026.

Water Quality and Infrastructure Notices

Cleveland Water continues to monitor a precautionary boil advisory issued for customers in Brunswick and a portion of Strongsville near the border of Pearl Road and Boston Road. The advisory follows multiple water main breaks earlier this month. While there is currently no evidence of contamination, residents in the affected area are advised to flush taps and boil water for at least three minutes before consumption. Additionally, the city is seeking public input on the proposed installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the Michael Zone and Sterling Recreation Centers. The public comment period remains open through February 6, 2026.

Public Safety: Nuisance Property Enforcement

Public safety officials have announced an aggressive expansion of nuisance property enforcement. Under the city's updated nuisance laws, 14 properties have recently been added to the permanent city database for violations ranging from derelict conditions to unruly tenant activity. Property owners are reminded that fines for non-compliance can range from $250 to $1,000 per day once a property is declared a public nuisance.
