City of Cleveland Public Notice: Winter Safety Advisories and Municipal Service Updates

Official Public Notice: Severe Winter Weather Advisory
The National Weather Service has issued an ongoing Winter Weather Advisory for Cuyahoga County, effective through the morning of Saturday, January 31, 2026. With wind chill values expected to remain between -10 and -20 degrees, the City of Cleveland has activated emergency cold-weather protocols. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure and check on elderly neighbors and pets. If travel is necessary, the Department of Public Works reminds motorists to yield to snowplows and allow extra time for commuting due to persistent slippery road conditions.
Activation of City Warming Centers
To ensure the safety of all residents during this period of extreme cold, the City of Cleveland is operating warming centers at select recreation centers through Sunday, February 1, 2026. These facilities provide a climate-controlled environment for those without adequate heating:
- Michael Zone Recreation Center: 6301 Lorain Avenue
- Sterling Recreation Center: 1380 East 32nd Street
- Collinwood Recreation Center: 16300 Lakeshore Boulevard
The centers remain open as designated warming spaces during standard operating hours, with extensions authorized based on the severity of the forecast. Residents seeking overnight shelter should contact the Coordinated Intake office for placement.
Public Comment Period: Electric Vehicle Infrastructure
The City of Cleveland, in partnership with the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA), is currently seeking public feedback regarding the proposed installation of new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The proposal includes four Level 2 chargers each at the Michael Zone and Sterling Recreation Centers. The official public comment period is open now and will conclude on February 6, 2026. Comments may be submitted via email to the NOACA Transportation Planning office or through the city’s online portal.
Public Safety and Municipal Governance Updates
Following the Safety Committee meeting held on January 28, 2026, the Department of Public Safety has released updates regarding the expansion of the city’s drone deployment program and enhancements to the existing nuisance laws. These measures are intended to bolster neighborhood surveillance and streamline the reporting of property violations. Additionally, the Urban Forestry Commission has finalized its winter meeting schedule to address reforestation goals for the 2026 fiscal year.
Waste Collection and Utility Reminders
The Division of Waste Collection and Disposal confirms that Saturday trash and recycling pick-ups will proceed as scheduled, weather permitting. Residents are reminded to place carts at least three feet apart to facilitate automatic arm pickup and ensure they are clear of snow and ice. Reports of missed collections should be directed to the 311 service line after 4:30 PM.
