New low-cost carrier adds two nonstop routes from Cleveland

Avelo Airlines is set to begin scheduled service at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, introducing nonstop flights to Concord, North Carolina, and New Haven, Connecticut. The move adds a new ultra-low-cost option for travelers and ties Cleveland to two smaller airports that Avelo has used as growth markets: Concord-Padgett Regional Airport (airport code USA) near Charlotte, and Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) in southern Connecticut.

The Concord route connects Cleveland to an airport positioned as an alternative to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Avelo opened a base of operations at Concord-Padgett Regional Airport in March 2025, indicating a longer-term operational footprint there, including locally based crews and aircraft rotations.

The New Haven route links Cleveland to Avelo’s largest operating base at Tweed-New Haven Airport, where the airline has built an extensive network since launching service there in November 2021. Avelo’s model at HVN has centered on point-to-point service on Boeing 737 aircraft, with schedules that often emphasize a few peak travel days each week rather than daily frequency.

How the routes fit Avelo’s network strategy

Avelo launched scheduled passenger flying in 2021 and has expanded through a network that favors smaller, less congested airports where it can operate with lower overhead and offer nonstop flights to leisure and visiting-friends-and-relatives markets. In recent years the airline has also adjusted routes and bases as demand changes, including trimming certain Concord-area routes while extending others further into 2026.

For Cleveland Hopkins, the addition of Avelo aligns with a broader trend: low-fare carriers are expanding and reshaping route maps using seasonal schedules and limited weekly frequencies. Cleveland has seen continued competition among discounters, with airlines adding and adjusting nonstop destinations as they test demand.

What travelers should know

  • Concord-Padgett Regional Airport serves the Charlotte region but operates on a smaller scale than Charlotte Douglas, often meaning a shorter curb-to-gate experience.

  • Tweed-New Haven Airport is a compact airport serving the New Haven area; Avelo is currently the primary commercial airline operating there.

  • As with many ultra-low-cost carriers, base fares typically cover the seat only, with additional charges common for services such as checked bags, carry-ons beyond personal items, seat selection, and itinerary changes.

Avelo’s Cleveland entry connects the city to two airports that the carrier has used as pillars for growth, reflecting a strategy built around nonstop point-to-point flying rather than traditional hub connections.

Flight schedules, days of operation, and introductory pricing can vary by season and are subject to change. Cleveland Hopkins’ addition of two new nonstop markets through Avelo expands choices for travelers seeking direct flights to the Carolinas and southern Connecticut without connecting through larger hubs.
