17-year-old indicted in killing of Jahari Stegall at Cleveland’s E. 185th Street deli

Grand jury action follows September 2025 shooting outside East 185th Street convenience store
A 17-year-old has been indicted in connection with the shooting death of another 17-year-old outside a deli in Cleveland’s North Shore Collinwood area, a case that has moved through both juvenile and adult-court processes over the past several months.
The victim, Jahari Stegall, 17, was killed on Sept. 19, 2025, after Cleveland police and emergency responders were called to a reported shooting at a convenience store in the 800 block of East 185th Street. Stegall was found with a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have identified the accused as Royal King, 17. Prosecutors have alleged the shooting was targeted and that Stegall and King were not closely acquainted.
What investigators say happened
Investigators have described a sequence of events captured on surveillance video. The video is described as showing King inside the store before Stegall arrived, followed by Stegall walking across the parking lot toward the entrance. Prosecutors have said King met Stegall near the doorway while holding a gun and that, after a brief exchange, Stegall was shot in the back of the head before King fled.
Authorities have said King arrived in a stolen vehicle and left the scene in that vehicle. Police later recovered the vehicle.
Date of shooting: Sept. 19, 2025
Location: 800 block of East 185th Street, Cleveland
Victim: Jahari Stegall, 17
Accused: Royal King, 17
Arrest and court status
King was arrested on Oct. 29, 2025, by a federal task force in the area of East 147th Street in Cleveland after warrants were issued in juvenile court. Authorities have said the warrants included aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, and carrying a concealed weapon.
In the latest court development, the case has been bound over to adult court, meaning it will proceed in the adult criminal system rather than remaining solely in juvenile court. Prosecutors have said a Cuyahoga County grand jury will determine the formal charges to be pursued following bindover.
King has been held on a $1 million bond, with detention at a juvenile facility pending further proceedings.
The case remains at the charging and pretrial stage, and the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
